Target in Finnish: what "target", "target market" and "targeting" mean

In Finnish, "target" is usually kohde or tavoite, a "target market" is kohdemarkkina and "targeting" is kohdentaminen. This page explains the marketing terms Finns meet in English, with plain examples.

The short answer

"Target" means a goal or something you aim at. In marketing it describes the customers you choose to reach: your target market (kohdemarkkina), your target audience (kohdeyleisö) and the act of aiming your message at them, targeting (kohdentaminen).

Finnish workplaces also use the loan words targetoida and targetti. They are informal; the standard Finnish verb is kohdentaa.

The group of customers a business chooses to serve. It is broader than a single campaign.

The same idea as target audience, and the usual word in Finnish marketing.

targeting

kohdentaminen

Choosing who sees your message, for example by interest, location or behaviour in an ad platform.

retargeting

uudelleenkohdentaminen

Showing ads again to people who have already visited your website.

buyer persona

asiakaspersoona

A semi-fictional portrait of your ideal customer, used to aim your marketing.
